Plant Noise Assessments in Bristol, Bath and South-West

We provide expert plant noise assessments in accordance with BS 4142 to support BREEAM assessments, planning applications and the discharge of conditions across Bristol, Bath and the wider South West. Our robust acoustic reports quantify operational plant noise, identify appropriate mitigation where required, and help demonstrate compliance with local authority and BREEAM requirements across a range of developments.

We have extensive experience delivering construction noise and vibration assessments for projects of all sizes, from small developments through to major infrastructure schemes. Our work is undertaken in accordance with the latest guidance and standards, including BS 5228, ensuring that noise and vibration are effectively managed so they remain acceptable in both level and duration throughout the construction programme.

We regularly support clients with Section 61 applications under the Control of Pollution Act 1974, preparing robust documentation that clearly demonstrates how noise and vibration will be controlled using best practicable means. Securing a Section 61 consent can provide contractors with greater certainty and protection against potential complaints, while giving local authorities confidence that impacts have been properly considered.

In addition, we provide comprehensive noise and vibration monitoring during construction to verify compliance with agreed limits and planning requirements. This enables potential issues to be identified early and addressed proactively, helping to minimise disruption to neighbouring receptors. Where required, we support contractors and project teams with practical mitigation strategies and ongoing advice to ensure works are carried out responsibly and in line with the construction noise and vibration assessment.

We assess noise from a range of fixed plant, including heat pumps, chillers, generators, condensers, extraction systems and industrial equipment. Surveys, calculations and modelling are used to evaluate impacts at nearby receptors across Bristol, Bath and the wider South West. Assessments are undertaken in accordance with BS 4142:2014+A1:2019, identifying impacts and defining mitigation where required. Solutions may include enclosures, louvres, barriers and layout optimisation to control noise effectively. Our reports support planning applications, discharge of conditions and BREEAM assessments, with an understanding of local authority expectations across Bristol City Council, Bath and North East Somerset and surrounding areas, helping minimise the risk of delay or objection.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The cost of a noise assessment completely depends on the size of the plant. For small single items of plant, the price starts from £800+VAT.

  • A noise survey requires us to visit the site and install a microphone at a location representative of the nearest noise-sensitive receptors (usually a dwelling) to establish baseline background sound levels and determine the design criteria for the assessment. The microphone is typically mounted on a tripod, with the sound level meter housed in a small Peli case and secured in a suitable location for the duration of the survey, which usually lasts 24 hours or longer depending on the situation.

  • Plant noise assessments are typically undertaken in accordance with BS 4142:2014+A1:2019, which provides the framework for assessing industrial and commercial sound.

  • To undertake noise impact assessments for planning applications or BREEAM, consultants are typically required to be “suitably qualified”. In practice, this generally means holding a relevant degree in acoustics or audio technology and being a member of the Institute of Acoustics. These qualifications and accreditations provide confidence that the consultant has the technical competence to deliver robust and reliable assessments.

  • Here is an example planning condition typically applied by Bristol City Council:

‘No development shall take place until an assessment to show that the rating level of any plant & equipment, as part of this development, will be at least 5 dB below the background level has been submitted to and been approved in writing by the Local Planning Authority.’
